ITV starts broadcasting live to mobile phones
ITV said on Tuesday it has began broadcasting live programmes to mobile phones. Although other broadcasters transmit some content to mobiles, the ITV deal with mobile network 3 is the first time live programming will be available on handsets, it said.
Last year Vodafone and satellite broadcaster Sky launched a range of mobile packages for customers while in June 2006 Channel 4 began simulcasts on the Internet. The BBC's foray into online simulcasts began with the World Cup this summer.
ITV said that, to begin with, adverts will not be shown on the mobile phone versions of ITV1 and ITV Play. Breaks will be filled with trailers for upcoming shows rather than ads.
China to produce 400 mln mobile phones in 2006
China is expected to produce 400 million mobile phones in 2006, half of the world's output, said a source with the Ministry of Information Industry.
In the first half of this year, China churned out 210 million mobile phones, up 64 percent over the same period of 2005, and the country's mobile phone export volume hit 13.3 billion U.S. dollars, China Youth Daily reported on Tuesday, quoting Wang Bingke, deputy director of the ministry's Economic System Reform and Operation Department.
China now has 420 million mobile phone subscribers and the number of subscribers increased by over 30 million from January to June this year. Enditem
Ban of camera phones in Doha schools - Many expat schools have total ban in place
The decision of the Ministry of Education in Doha banning school students from using mobile phones with cameras inside campuses is expected to have a positive impact on the school environment, say members of the academic community here.
Decision No 14 issued on Monday seeks to prevent the use of mobile phones in school premises, especially in classrooms. It has been introduced in the framework of Law No 57 of 2001 which deals with disciplinary measures for students.
The Ministry has put a blanket ban on carrying mobile phones with cameras inside campus and banned the use of all kinds of mobile phones-whether they come with a camera or not-during classes. Students are also banned from carrying any mobile phone during examinations.
The ban applies to all government and private schools from the current academic year. Article 4 of the decision says that the concerned authorities in the Ministry will adopt a suitable mechanism to implement the decision.

Now, can you guess what my issue will be with this? First off, I don’t know why 10 year olds (the target age group) need a mobile except for emergencies – so what if one such emergency happens during the time that the phones set to be out of use? The idea of setting spending limits so easily is a good one though, I’ll give them that, but on a different nostalgic note – I grew up just fine without my mum having to sit and watch my movements on a PC screen. I know the world’s a different place now – but still not sure how effective a “safety device” this is. I hope they prove me wrong. |
